Port-au-Prince – At least 38 Haitian migrants drowned and 87 were rescued on Saturday, December 24th by Cuban Coast Guard after their boat sank off the coast of Cuba, said Cuban Civil Defense, quoted from the French daily Le Monde. [Dec 30 update: the number of casualties was revised to 45, and the boat is now estimated to have carried over 160 passengers (Sapa).]

Punta de Maisi is near to northwest Haiti, around the area of Mole Saint Nicolas.

A boat from the 1990’s full of desperate people.

The victims include women and children, said the source.

The “half-submerged” boat was spotted by the Coast Guard about a hundred meters from the coast of Punta de Maisi at the eastern end of Cuba.

Civil Defense, which did not specify the type of vessel involved, said the Red Cross and Coast Guard are continuing search operations for other possible survivors.

The Haitian government announced measures to follow up after its Cuban counterpart.

According to a statement from the Haitian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, measures were adopted so the survivors are repatriated in Haiti following diplomatic formalities that are already underway between the two governments.

The Ministry

“Deplores the tragedy” and “encourages stowaways to listen to the voice of reason, to stop the organization of such illegal departures, costly in human lives.”

Shipwrecks of makeshift boats carrying, not only Haitian migrants – but also Cubans – are common in the Caribbean. The migrants hope to find better living conditions in the United States, said Le Monde.

In July 2009, some 70 Haitian migrants lost their lives in the sinking of their boat off the British Isles of Turks-and-Caiques.
