HAITI ALBA SUMMIT

Port au Prince, Haiti Feb 2 (Reuters) – Haiti will attend as an “observer country” the summit of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of the Americas (ALBA) to be held on Sunday in Caracas, a spokesman for the Presidency told Reuters.

Haitian President Michel Martelly will travel tomorrow to Venezuela and Caracas, and on Sunday will move to Panama, where on Monday he will meet with President Ricardo Martinelli.

The spokesman said that Haiti does not intend to apply for membership in ALBA, contrary to an announcement on Tuesday by Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, who said that the Caribbean nation and others have requested membership.

Haitian Foreign Minister Laurent Lamothe* is also part of the Haitian delegation that will attend the summit of the ALBA, consisting of: Cuba, Venezuela, Bolivia, Ecuador, Nicaragua, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Dominica, and Antigua and Barbuda.

The Haitian Foreign Minister will participate in meetings that will begin tomorrow to prepare for the summit on Sunday.

In a statement, Haitian President Martelly said he believes that his country’s relations with Venezuela have a special character based on

“The historical ties of solidarity”

between the two countries, and he is therefore committed to strengthen this, with the aim of

“improving the lives of the Haitian people.”

After the meeting of the ALBA, Martelly will start a trip to Panama, where on Monday morning he will hold a bilateral meeting with President Ricardo Martinelli.

The trip aims to

“strengthen bilateral relations, analyze the points of contact between the two countries and share experiences on issues of common interest,” the spokesman said.

In addition, the president will address the regulation of commercial activities of Haitians on the delivery of visas, currently two to three months, and the treatment meted out to Haitian residents, said the note from the Presidency that did not offer further details on these matters.

During these trips, Martelly will continue his advocacy for the country and the business opportunities that may be of interest to foreign investors, including Venezuelans and Panamanians.
