Port-au-Prince, 11 Jan 2012 – Thousands took to the streets of Port-au-Prince to protest the post-earthquake situation, on the eve of second anniversary of the earthquake that devastated the capital, according to AlterPresse.

The march was organized by “Eye to Eye,” an umbrella of ten Haitian organizations that have joined forces to highlight the housing problems exacerbated by the earthquake.

The protesters marched through the streets under the banner “Onward to Parliament.” They started the march from an area commonly known as the crossroads to the airport (north of the capital) and headed towards the Parliament building (west of the city).

Several MPs, including both Parliament Speakers, Simon Deras Dieusseul (Senate) and Levaillant Louis-Jeune (House of Representatives), convened an emergency meeting to receive the representatives of  “Eye to Eye.” The parliamentarians were presented a document containing the protesters’ key demands.

These demands, based on the various meetings organized by Eye to Eye, concern land reform, decentralization, social housing, and transparency in the management of public affairs, among other things.

Speaker of the Senate Deras Dieusseul Simon announced the formation of a bicameral commission to consider the document as a main topic for the Parliament’s agenda for its meeting on January 18th.

For his part, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Levaillant Louis Young, invited all sectors to follow this approach and bring their concerns to the Parliament without hesitation.

Port-au-Prince, 11 janv.
