Port-au-Prince, Haiti – The Senate committee charged with investigating the nationality of government members says it suspects the existence of a counterfeiting operation in the service of the executive.

In an interview with AlterPresse, Committee Chairman Senator Moise Jean Charles says he suspects that there exists in the country “a network of forgers and wrongdoers” dedicated to Martelly.

This statement follows the announcement that the Committee discovered that several apparently genuine Haitian passports were submitted to them by government officials who hold a foreign nationality.

Moise Jean Charles added that the Haitian National Police should work to

“dismantle all the networks that provide these fake passports.”

He said that the committee will take whatever time it needs before making public the report of its work. The report had been expected on March 29.

The committee also informed AlterPresse that a letter has been sent to President Martelly requesting that he updates his file.

“Yesterday we sent a letter to President Martelly in which we asked him to clarify certain aspects of his file,”

informed Senator Moise Jean Charles.

However, the president’s spokesman Lucien Jura indicated, during a brief interview with AlterPresse, that

“we have not yet received a letter from the committee.”

Mystery still hangs over the passport that Martelly used for his travel abroad during the 2010 to 2011 election campaign. According to one of the former singer’s passports, he would have made 21 trips to countries that did not affix any seal of entry.

Another of the President’s passports is dated 1981 to 1991, although a Haitian passport is valid for only 5 years.

Furthermore, on March 28 MP Arnel Belizaire presented a dossier of about one thousand pages with evidence that the head of state has made use of “forgery,” and at least one [other] member of the government holds a foreign nationality .

On an another note: the committee studying the ratification of prime minister nominee Laurent Lamothe is waiting for the report on the nationality of members of the [proposed] government to move forward.
