The protests were occasioned by the government’s failure to respond to the residents’ demands and several recent actions, including the destruction of parts of the island for road construction by a Dominican company, house-to-house searches by militarized police, a visit by the Tourism Minister that showed no evidence of good faith, and the continued detention of community representative Jean Matulnes Lamy.
